Yokohama City and Nissan partnership to pave way for further collaboration

Yokohama City and Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today concluded a new agreement to support Yokohama City’s pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals and environmental initiatives by enabling resource and expertise sharing in a variety of innovative and forward-looking projects. These efforts will complement the city’s ongoing brand-building and vitalization efforts.

A partnership built on Nissan’s decades-long history in Yokohama
Nissan was founded in Yokohama in 1933, and the company’s original headquarters building still stands on the site of its current Yokohama Plant. In 2009, Nissan relocated its global headquarters from Tokyo to Yokohama’s Minatomirai district.

Since then, Yokohama City and Nissan have worked together on numerous ventures, starting in 2009 with the launch of Yokohama Mobility Project Zero, a pioneering local initiative to encourage the widespread use of electric vehicles. More recently, Nissan and Yokohama City jointly conducted field tests of a driverless mobility service.

Nissan has also extended support for local events, including the Yokohama Marathon and the city’s Otomatsuri music festival.

Marking the 10th anniversary of Nissan’s move to Yokohama, today’s partnership sets the stage for deeper and broader collaboration that builds on the success of previous ventures.

Scope of the new agreement
The new partnership provides for the following kinds of collaborations:
1. Projects aiming to foster and share innovation through ventures with local businesses.
2. Projects for environmental improvement to promote a sustainable society (including awareness-raising activities).
3. Projects supporting community-building and local vitalization efforts.
4. Projects related to cultural programs and sporting events.
5. Other projects or activities aiming to vitalize and contribute to the local community.

Upcoming project in Minatomirai district
During the next fiscal year, Nissan will partner with Yokohama City and local organizations to create a special-purpose brand experience space from which to communicate its industry-leading customer-centric technologies to audiences in and outside Japan.

Nissan will construct the facility on two plots of land in the center of the city’s Minatomirai district. The space will host a range of exhibits designed to showcase advanced technologies in innovative and exciting new ways, and will serve as a venue for a number of events that will be open to members of the public.

This new brand experience space will give visitors the opportunity to experience the technologies that will define the future of mobility and society, while also energizing the Minatomirai district and enhancing Yokohama City’s brand value.

Nissan and Yokohama City will announce further details regarding this project at a later date.
